deadline on the federal budget, paul ryan have 11 days to craft a new budget plan. if they fail, the federal government will face a second round of automatic spending cuts and yet another possibility of a shutdown early next year. today our first read team says both sides are optimistic but that talk of a so-called grand bargain no longer on the table. what's being debated between ryan and murray is a very small deal. joining me live now, senior political editor mark murray. i guess you have to get something done small because it seems a lot of bigger things, things that many people thought would move right along have not. >> that's right. after the government shutdown that we had back in october, tamron, probably is the sensible thing to set your sights very low. that seems to be what's going on right now. there is a lot of optimism on capitol hill. it seems all players and everybody want some type of deal. the chatter i'm hearing is that there are issues that need to be resolved but things look bright, at least get a baseline spending number that is the number that would fund

of view from rand paul of kentucky, saying that by extending it, it's actually a disservice because statistically those who are the longest unemployed are the hardest to employ, so pushing them into a category where they may be less attractive to future employers. democrats say there aren't the jobs in what has been a protected recession and that people need this help. there are state level benefits and federal benefits and a smaller number of people who have exhausted all of that who are really at risk for this when it happens. the deadline, december 28th, is it possible it can get rolled into a budget discussion? that is certainly being discussed but the momentum towards seeing this being a critical part of the discussion has not bubbled up yet. the white house wants to see an extension. democrats are pushing for it. but they are also saying it's possible the big budget issue of keeping the government open to avoid a shutdown, that that would not necessarily have to have this extension to go forward, making it that much harder to make this the kind of critical issue that would mak

alone, police have reported 180 accidents in 12 hours. the weather channel's paul goodloe is live with the forecast. this is pretty much a wash for the weekend even into next week with the second storm here as i understand it, paul. >> that's the key. you're from texas, it's hard to get 20s for a consistent amount of days and that's what we have here. we'll stay in the 20s into the weekend. hence all of the things being canceled. the good news for dallas is reporting all of the that freezing rain and sleet out of the metro plex but still going on across much of arkansas and southern missouri and into western tennessee and kentucky and indiana and ohio dealing with this. the freezing rain is slowly going to come to the end around little rock and we're seeing fine, good riddance. it's 26 in dallas. we'll be around the same temperature for a high all weekend long. so whatever is frozen right now will stay frozen throughout the weekend. here's our forecast. throughout the afternoon we start pushing freezing rain and sleet out of little rock but still in the memphis area, also causing
